ABOUT HEALTHIER SOMERSET

Healthier Somerset is a coalition created to improve the health and well-being of everyone who lives and works in Somerset County. We promote healthy lifestyles through collaboration among our partners.

Healthier Somerset is comprised of more than 50 organizations representing thousands of Somerset County residents, businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations,

public health officials, healthcare providers, government, and faith-based organizations.

Healthier Somerset is responsible for the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) and the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), underwritten by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset. The CHIP is the defining document for information on Somerset County’s most pressing health issues and the plan used by the hospital and Somerset County public health officials to address these issues.

The current CHIP (2016-2019) is available here.

MAKING SOMERSET THE HEALTHIEST COUNTY IN NJ

According to the 2016 County Health Rankings, Somerset County is ranked 2nd in New Jersey for healthy behaviors and 3rd healthiest county overall. Somerset County is a healthy community, with rates of disease that are often lower than the U.S., the state of New Jersey, and other New Jersey counties.

However, there are areas where we can improve. The 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) showed that mental health and substance abuse issues were seen as key health concerns for the community. Chronic disease prevention, through healthy eating and physical activity, was also viewed by the community as a priority need, and seniors were identified as a priority population for services and support.

The physical and mental health of Somerset County are directly tied to our economic well-being. By bringing all parties with an interest in health to the table, Healthier Somerset is uniquely positioned to influence public policy that creates improved physical, mental, and economic health in our county.

We invite you to support Healthier Somerset.
